UWEZO: Disability Inclusion

Occupational skills and visibility for people with disabilities. "Uwezo" means "abilities" in Swahili.

UWEZO (“abilities” in Swahili) provides occupational skills training for refugees with disabilities in Nakivale. A December 2021 survey identified around 754 people with disabilities in the settlement’s Base Camp zone, including people with albinism, many facing barriers to the marketplace. Annual consultations have brought together around 50 people over two years to shape the program.

The program also builds visibility. Through a partnership with New York’s Heidi Latsky Dance and its On Display Global initiative, participants in Nakivale joined a video event in December 2022 and a 24-hour worldwide event in 2024.
